Although being an interactive producer is one of the most sought-after roles in an agency, it isn’t for everyone. Here are some skills I’ve seen consistently in great creative interactive producers:
- Great at problem-solving – A lot of what you’ll be doing as an interactive producer is finding solutions on how to make things happen. You need to be creative and think about different ways to approach and solve for problems. Saying no is okay, but that often needs to be followed by a solution that is doable. There is nothing more frustrating for teams than a producer that is stifling the creativity all the time.
- Organized – You need to really have it together as you’ll be managing very large budgets for clients, as well as timelines to ensure the project is delivered on time. Your team will also be counting on you to let them know what needs to happen and when.
- Calmness and Confidence – The producer sets the tone for the whole team when you’re in production. If you’re giving off a nervous vibe, then the whole team will start to freak out. This is crucial for highly technical projects where the rest of the team is feeling out of their comfort zone. Many people say that the swan is the spirit animal of producers. Calm and serene above the surface, paddling like crazy under the water.
- Interest in Technology and Innovation – No one knows everything, but having an interest in technology and keeping abreast of what is happening is important so that you can speak confidently about different technologies and pull references to inspire teams.
- Detail Oriented – You will be responsible for many things that require you to be very detail oriented, such as writing the scope of work for the project or knowing all the ins and outs of the project.
